Provisional working title of the doctoral project: Parenthood and migration: an empirical study of the educational needs of migrant women from Arabic-speaking countries
Abstract
The everyday realities of families in German society are increasingly characterized by processes of change at different levels. In addition to the currently much-discussed intensification of parenthood and the increasing decoupling of social and biological parenthood, this also includes a change in guiding principles and ideals of parenting. These developments are accompanied cross-sectionally by another process of change, which represents the starting point of this work: The migration-related ethnic heterogenization of families. The discursive focus of this trend is fed by the numerous implications of migrant families as a category regarding various fields of policy and practice because they constitute a prerequisite and a potential for integration processes. Also, a plea for a closer cooperation with migrant parents that is considered necessary can be heard, especially in the pedagogical discourse.
Against the background of numerous disadvantages especially of newly migrated families, the question arises as to whether public family support is made available for them, which must meet their specific needs and living conditions. This support includes, above all, the legally anchored public offers for family education programs and family counselling, which are currently characterized by an underrepresentation of migrant parents despite a decreasing middle-class orientation.
To open this support system to migrant parents, a (group-)differentiated knowledge of the living conditions and educational needs is necessary, which is essential for a target group-oriented development of support programs. At the same time, there is an enormous lack of current empirical studies that investigate the connection between parenthood and migration.
This work is intended to illuminate this research gap by examining Arabic-speaking women and mothers. The focus is on pedagogical peculiarities and challenges that result from the migration situation of the families, which is theorized as a lifeworld recontextualization. This means a social, cultural, and institutional change that is constituted against the background of the characteristics and orientations of the study group - their knowledge - which has a significant impact on their parenting. In the study, an explorative sequential mixed-method approach is used.
